581 EYU was one of three Emergency Equipment Tenders built for London Transport Underground in 1963. To allow for a larger crew carrying capacity on the standard 3 ton chassis the cab was extended by Mann Egerton, who also built the box body for the carrying of emergency equipment such as jacks, oxygen and acetylene bottles etc and equipment to allow for re-railing. It worked out of Hainault depot between 1963 and 1975 and after Hainault closed was transferred to Neasden Underground depot until being withdrawn from service at the end of 1980. In March 1981 it was purchased for preservation by the current owner, the vehicle having covered just over 19,000 miles from new.
